paper analyzes the website Tobacco-Freekids.org, a site that is designed to encourage young people not to start smoking, or to quit if they do. Discussion The sites home page looks
like the front page of a newspaper, which may not be a good thing in an age when people are more tuned to visual images than the printed word. It
comprises five separate columns; the one to the far left is the typical "navigation" column, with a list of links to other pages of the site, including "Take Action," "Donate,"
"Federal Initiatives" and so on. The middle three columns have links to various reports and press releases, plus a "Utilities" section that has links to such things as "About Us,"
"Job Openings" and "Help"; this section deals with what might be called the mechanics of maintaining the site itself. The far right hand column has links to "Highlights," usually late
breaking news stories about matter of interest to those who are trying to stop kids from smoking. Some of the stories on the site are "Big Tobacco: Guilty as
Charged," which discusses an August, 2006 ruling by U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler, who "issued a final opinion in the U.S. governments landmark lawsuit against the major tobacco companies" (Big
tobacco: guilty as charged, 2006). The lawsuit found that tobacco companies have "violated civil racketeering laws and defrauded the American people by lying for decades about the health risks of
smoking and their marketing to children" (Big tobacco: guilty as charged, 2006). The fact that the site is still providing an active link to a story that is almost
