The contemporary workplace has within it many features of organization that emanate from the model of bureaucracy. One can see this as many offices continue to possess timeclocks or devices to monitor behavior and presence. There are time sheets, recordings of what an individual it doing, videotape and accountability in terms of volume. Quality seems to be sacrificed for quantity and orderliness. There is a sense that things must be done a certain way. In comprehending the tenets of bureaucracy and how it is manifest in the present society, it pays to look at the past and to the model that started it all. It is of course Max Weber who most thoroughly explained the idea, but why was he so interested in it? How does one come up with such a comprehensive model from scratch? Sociologist Max Webers inner tensions stemmed primarily from the tangled web of his relations within his family, as well as from his attempts to escape from Germany (Coser 234). His questioning of authority in his personal life and his fascination with the topic certainly relate to his own situation (234).
