context of increasing globalisation and its application to countries such as Australia, it is useful to briefly consider the history of web service applications, and in particular the impact of
XML/HTML technology in this area. Although it is only in the past twenty years or so that the Internet and the Web have come to be regarded as essential to
all aspects of commerce and trade, the new technology and the various ways in which it has been utilised in the business world have expanded rapidly, to the extent that
it is almost impossible to maintain a competitive advantage without using some form of Net and Web interaction, as well as making use of IT networks within organisations themselves. In
addition, the development of XML in web services has probably brought about almost as radical a change in e-commerce as the earlier introduction of web services in general.
As noted by Barefoot (2004), prior to
the development of Web services, the exchange of information in e-commerce was via enterprise application integration, or EAI. Software developers were confined to creating one-off solutions for system integration, and
every time two companies wished to exchange data a new solution would have to be created for that specific application. This meant that there was little coordination or standardisation across
the field, and the process of integration application was unwieldy and complicated. Many of these problems were addressed by the introduction of XML, which allowed developers to separate the content
