long ago that the web based applications that we all enjoy today were just a figment in someones imagination. Computers were looked at not just as a means to
access data but as a means to store and modify that data. Every desktop system came with an almost standard assortment of computer software programs that allowed data management
and every computer came with a certain amount of storage capacity. While the same is largely true today, we depend less today on those personal characteristics of our own
computers and more on web-based applications and storage. It is not hard to envision a future where individual computers will be primarily designed as web access devices and all
of the real work will occur on the web itself. The possibility of data storage and management transitioning to an almost
complete reliance on web-based applications, of course, been thoroughly bantered about for a number of years. Indeed, several attempts were being made quite some time ago to put this
transition into effect. In 1995, for example, Paul Graham launched what would become the most popular online storebuilder ever. In an article written six years later, Graham confesses
that Yahoo Storebuilder was originally envisioned as a desktop application. The idea to rewrite the application so that it was supported not by the individual computer but rather by
the Web server itself turned out to be a prediction for what was to come in terms of web-based software. Graham
(2001) touts the benefits of web-based applications as including the security of not having to worry about what might happen to your data in a fire, theft, or loss.
