had the option of wearing hats in almost any surrounding, but for men the concept has been forbidden generally for reasons of respect. Men are required, by social standards, to remove their hats when seated in some activity such as eating or learning. But, as our society changes many believe that these old ideals and customs are no longer necessary and that anyone who desire to should be allowed to wear hats, especially in classrooms where comfort in a learning situation is often encouraged. Bearing that in mind the following paper argues that hats should be allowed in classrooms. Hats in Classrooms Two of the most important things that students are told in schools today is that they have a legal right to be respected and that they have a legal right to choices. In better understanding some of the foundations regarding these realities in schools we look at the following list of rights and responsibilities that come to us from one school, an elementary school. Bothwell Elementary School (2002) states that "Students have a RIGHT to be heard" and that they "have a RESPONSIBILITY to listen and not to talk, shout or make loud or rude noises when others are speaking." They also have the right "to privacy and their personal space" as well as a "RESPONSIBILITY to respect the personal property of others and to accept the right of others privacy" (Bothwell Elementary School, 2002). They have the right to be respected and a responsibility to "help people feel happy and to not tease or bug other people or hurt their feelings, regardless of personal feelings towards others.
