battles that were won or lost. It was a time of technological advancement and as such new developments were constantly being made to one type of weapon or another. However,
in other respects sometimes the people with the best weapons do not ultimately win, and such appears to be the case during WWII. For example, the Russians proved incredibly effective
with relatively antiquated weapons, while the Germans, with their powerful u-boats and their tanks were ultimately destroyed by other nations. And, of course, no discussion of WWII and weapons would
be complete without the mention of the atomic bomb which had never been seen before and ended the war with Japan. With these realities in mind the following paper examines
weapons of WWII, their role and their significance in the war. Weapons in WWII In Germany it is noted that the
standard issue for the infantry was the rifle, "designed by Mauser and dubbed the Karabiner 98k. This weapon was a 5-shot, bolt-action rifle that actually dated back to 1898 when
it was first adopted by the Imperial German Army" (Heitmann et al.). While this was their standard issue they were also working on an automatic rifle and then came the
submachine gun, with the common one being the MP40 for German soldiers (Heitmann et al.). With further development they finally "Germans settled on two light machine gun designs and used
them throughout the war, the MG34 and MG42. The MG42 went on to become the standard design for a light machine gun for NATO and is now used in a
