through history, although the 20th century has seen weaponry advance beyond comprehension with the atomic bomb and other weapons of warfare. But, in much of American history weapons were unchanging
in many ways. The following paper examines the history of weaponry in the United States from the latter part of the 15th century to the latter part of the 19th
century. Weapons in America from the 1400s to the 1800s In looking at weaponry in the United States, or what is now known as the United States, back
in the latter part of the 1400s it is perhaps also important to first take note of native weaponry, which is what the colonists and explorers were essentially up against.
Stone arrowheads were the common weapon and they were attached to spears for the most part. But, as the influence of the settlers and the invaders came into play, aside
from guns that would make their way into the lives of the peoples, it seems that many Native tribes incorporated metal into their weaponry, using metal instead of stone for
arrowheads. One author notes, "United States Army introduced ample raw strip metal in the barrel hoops and box bands which came along with the military supply wagons, metal arrowpoints become
an increasingly common part of the archaeological record after 1600" (Of Stone and Stories: Pueblitos of Dinetah, 2009). They were used well into the 1800s (Of Stone and Stories: Pueblitos
of Dinetah, 2009). There were also guns in early America, for the settlers and invaders. The first gun appears to be the matchlock. "The first dated illustration of a
