Then there are the welfare recipients, the blue collar workers, the so-called middle class, and the so-called upper class. In reality, there is even a tremendous inequality in wealth within these various components of the American society. We measure wealth not just in terms of the money that we have in our pockets and our banks but also in the material goods that we have amassed. To a homeless individual, items like a coat and a backpack could distinguish them in terms of wealth between the homeless individual with nothing but their clothes on their back. Many homeless individuals have no place to sleep other than a park bench or other public area, for example. Others have actually built small villages in the remote areas of a city. There they vigilantly guard the trappings of their "wealth". One might have only a cardboard box as their "house" while another might actually have a tent. One might have a propane cook stove while another might only have a Bic lighter and a camp fire. The blue collar worker category, in turn, also has its share of wealth inequality between those that comprise its ranks. The fast food worker and the pipe fitter alike belong to this category yet one is paid a salary that they can barely subsist on while the other is paid quite handsomely in comparison.
