has died. A woman in her time had little choice but to be a mother and a wife, unless she were poor or a whore, and the woman in Chopins
story is the symbolic representation of the role women must play. However, when she knows her husband is dead she begins to feel a sort of life grow inside her,
giving her hope at freedom. A seemingly strong and independent woman, the following paper illustrates how she was actually a woman who suffered from great weakness, both in resolve and
in her physical condition. Weakness: "The Story of an Hour" In the very beginning of the story the reader is given
the information that Mrs. Mallard is physically somewhat weak: "Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as
possible the news of her husbands death" (Chopin). This sets the stage for understanding how Mrs. Mallard was likely a frail sort of woman. She was not old, but rather
"She was young, with a fair, calm face," a piece of information that clearly allows the reader to see she was not frail because of her age (Chopin).
In many ways, as the story progresses, the reader essentially forgets her heart condition. But, if one keeps this in mind one can perhaps
begin to see that perhaps her heart condition, or part of her heart condition, has to do with the fact that she has ultimately resigned herself to live the life
