social, political and economic arenas are devised in such a way as to favor males and disfavor females. The division of genders is certainly far more apparent in some states
than others, as examples presented shortly will illustrate. Nonetheless, it exists in all types of states. H?gskola offers a good example in a discussion of the change from a
socialist state to a capitalist state of the different nations created when the former Soviet Union collapsed. As the newly formed nations attempted to make the transition, gendered issues became
very clear. H?gskola notes that the "transition in the post-socialist states was carried through in a mental atmosphere characterized by a strong belief in the values of liberalism" (2001).
Everything became chaotic in the transition. Privatization of production was extremely disordered that had very little control from the governments. That meant that capitalism was being introduce before the countries
had established a democracy. It is not surprising that a multitude of social problems erupted. Many analysts went back to 18th and 19th century theories of liberalism in an attempt
to explain what was happening as these nations entered a transition in post-socialism. The people knew that the standard of living was higher in capitalist nations than in socialist nations
but they did not know how to get there (H?gskola, 2001). As these countries were making the transition, it was also clear that women suffered the consequences far
more than did the men in the post-socialist countries. Analysts asserted that the reasons were found in the theories of liberal democracy where the right to property belonged under the
