a burial ground and meeting place for members of the Lenee-Lanape people, a section of the Delaware Tribe, whose lands extended over much of what is known today as the
state of New Jersey (Taylor, Sturtevant 224). After British settlements were established, there were several conflicts between the settlers and the French in the 1740s. These conflicts culminated
in the French and Indian war which broke out in 1754 between England and France, which lasted for nine years (Cook 90). During this war, the French persuaded several
tribes of Native Americans to aid them in fighting the British settlers, including the traditionally peaceful Lenee-Lanape people (Cook 95). In May, 1756, the Lenni-Lenape raided Paulins Kill (Cook
95), and while the sixty families living in the area escaped unharmed, the settlement was destroyed (Cook 95). The New Jersey legislature called the Lenni-Lenape at that time "Enemies,
Rebels, and Traitors to his most sacred Majesty" (Cook 95), and offered a reward of 150 Spanish dollars for the capture of any adult Lenni-Lenape or 130 Spanish dollars for
the capture of any under the age of fifteen (Cook, 95). In late 1758, Governor Barnard and other members of the New Jersey government met with two hundred tribal chiefs
and negotiated the return of all prisoners as well as offering 1,600 pounds to purchase any land they owned in the colony as well as compensation for any wrongs they
felt they had suffered (Cook 97). The acceptance of the offer marked the last conflict between the British settlers of New Jersey and the Native Americans and the transfer
