is a serious ongoing problem that comes in many forms and affects many water systems throughout the nation. From runoff occurring from melting snows that travel into rivers and lakes,
to the dumping of harmful chemicals into water systems, water pollution is a serious concern in the country. The following paper examines water pollution in the United States.
Water Pollution in the United States In terms of classifying water pollution there is generally considered to be two categories of water pollution (Grinning Planet, 2005). There is the point
source and the nonpoint source (Grinning Planet, 2005). Point source pollution is caused by substance and chemicals that are put directly into a body of water (Grinning Planet, 2005).
Nonpoint sources of pollution are those forms of pollution that come from indirect sources such as through changes in the environment to run off or seepage of pollutants (Grinning Planet,
2005). "An example of a nonpoint-source of water pollution is when fertilizer from a farm field is carried into a stream by rain (i.e. run-off)" (Grinning Planet, 2005).
As we could well imagine, point source pollution is something that is quite obvious and thus generally monitored and regulated by the government. However, "political
factors may complicate how successful efforts are at true pollution control. Nonpoint sources are much more difficult to monitor and control, and today they account for the majority of contaminants
in streams and lakes" (Grinning Planet, 2005). In one incident involving nonpoint source pollution we look at a chemical known as 1,4 dioxane which was utilized as a solvent in
the medical filtration systems of Gelman Sciences Inc prior to 1985 (Harrison, 2005; 12). This problem is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan where the chemical is making its way through
