this is significant in itself, but the total absence of joy or purpose in her life. She appears to be imitating the motions of life without actually experiencing any positive
human feelings, and all her interactions with others are kept at a level where they are just enough to keep her life functioning, nothing more. Her brief socialising with Josette
every lunchtime is borne not out of a desire for friendship, but an acknowledgement that to speak to no-one at all would be noticeable, whereas to be selective in ones
friends would not. She calls her parents only when absolutely necessary, since she is aware that she has a duty to maintain the bond between them, but although she can
clearly visualise her mothers joy at the phone calls, there is no answering joy in her own heart, just the knowledge that she has successfully maintained another aspect of the
fa?ade which is her life. Even her call to Eric
does not signify the breaking-down of any barriers between them, but rather reinforces the fact that she is on the outside of Erics life: despite the messages he leaves for
her, it is apparent that his "real" life is with his wife and children, and that Nadine is only on the periphery. It is ironic, of course, that the person
with whom she does develop some degree of empathy is the voiceless patient, Ms Hinds, who after the initial shock of her laryngectomy quickly finds another means to communicate: it
is Nadine who has "no voice", in the end, rather than the patient.
