But, realistically we must wonder if the water in the bottles is any better for you or whether people buy it because it is convenient and a sign of affluence
to some extent. The following paper presents a research of whether or not bottled water is any better for you than tap water. Water: Bottled or Tap?
According to the FDA the guidelines used for tap water have generally been gradually applied to bottled water as well (Bullers, 2002). As such
we can assume, from the start, that the standards of what is allowed in water, and what is not allowed in all water, is the same indicating they are both
equally healthy for you. There are a few instances where there are differences, however. For example, tap water runs through pipes and
these pipes can often contain lead. "Because lead can leach from pipes as water travels from water utilities to home faucets, the EPA set an action level of 15 parts
per billion (ppb) in tap water" (Bullers, 2002). When it comes to bottled water, however, the water does not travel through pipes and as such "the lead limit is set
at 5 ppb. Based on FDA survey information, bottlers can readily produce bottled water products with lead levels below 5 ppb" (Bullers, 2002).
