These facilities include the largest concentration of vinyl plastic manufacturers in the U.S., oil refineries, a coal-fired power plant, and chemical production facilities. According to the Toxic Release
Inventory (TRI), a self-reported industry database, 11 of the 17 facilities surrounding Mossville collectively released more than 2.5 million pounds of toxic materials into the air, water, land and for
disposal off-site in 1999. Total production-related waste for the same facilities topped 85 million pounds" (Anonymous, 2007). Historically, toxic soil has
been unearthed and redistributed into landfills; tainted sediment has continued to spill into bodies of water, kill the fish and sicken all who eat it; contaminated air drifts into other
cities; and polluted groundwater has all too often leeched its way into drinking supplies. In short, no method to liberate heavy-metal contamination has proven effective for eradicating its presence.
In order for Calcasieu Parish to address the overwhelming air and water pollution caused by the multitude of refineries, alternative approaches must be tried that actually remove the toxic
substances from air and water. Phytoremediation - the process by which green plants are used to break down and/or absorb toxic substances in air, soil, sediment, sludge and groundwater
