only three to five days (Colbert, 2002). Over sixty percent of the human body is comprised of water, or about two-thirds of a persons body weight (Water: How Is
It Used, 2003; Colbert, 2002). Blood is 82 percent water, while the brain and muscles are 75 percent water (Colbert, 2002, p. 27). The primary component of human
bodily fluids is also water, such as saliva, bile, gastric and pancreatic juices, and the secretions from the intestines (Colbert, 2002). It provides invaluable aid to the performance of
bodily functions such as delivering nutrients to cells, assists in circulation and digestion, and also contributes to the elimination of such wastes as lactic acid, uric acid and ammonia (Colbert,
2002). In order to keep the body functioning at peak capacity, it is recommended that a person drink between two and three quarts of water each day (Colbert, 2002).
Furthermore, water has become essential to survival of civilization as well. It is necessary for farming, sanitation and wastewater treatment (to prevent the spread of germs and to
keep rivers and streams from harmful pollutants), can be harnessed to generate electricity, and is heavily relied upon in industry to keep machinery operating efficiently and is used in the
preparation of food, and in the manufacturing of what have become the necessities of life, including paper, clothing, automobiles, and even childrens toys (Water: How It Is Used, 2003). If
