a towering performance from Gerard Butler as King Leonidas, Watchmen attempts to cover decades and has no strong main character to carry viewers along. Happily, the many flaws of the
film are not discussed further; they serve only to remind viewers that there might have been a good movie lurking under all this, but Snyder never found it. This paper
discusses the way gender is used in the film, as a marker of the "heroes," and in relationships, as well as in more ordinary scenes. Discussion
The research for this paper is based on repeated viewings of the film itself and careful note taking. The film is set in 1985 in an alternate
U.S., where the Cold War is rapidly escalating into a shooting war; Nixon, instead of being forced to resign, has been elected for the third time; and conservatives run everything.
Nixon has gotten rid of the superheroes, the rich are in charge and society is a shambles. In the film generally, gender is
marked by an exaggerated sense of male and female. That is, the men are aggressively male while the women are highly-sexed female types. The costuming of the superheroes carries this
to excess. Most of the male costumes have an extremely detailed musculature, so that the person wearing the costume looks like a "ripped" superman, whether he is or not. This
