then the recycling or disposal of waste that is created by industrial, commercial and residential parties. There are different types of collection services, recycling and waste may be anything from
the sorting and relying of plastics and cans to the use of waste to produce energy. Where hazardous waste is seen the waste management company are also responsible for identifying,
treating and labelling it. With the processes including manual collection, haulage, sorting and transfer as well as the management of landfill sites and recycling plants the reasons and need for
vertical integration becomes more apparent. If we look at the market size in the US this is growing and there is a high level of concentration as during the 1990s
a higher degree of environmental standards were brought in which has created a position where there has been an increased pressure for integration and there has been acquisition. Looking at
the different types of waste management companies they are publicly traded companies as well as many smaller private and public sector forms. Figure 1 shows the position in 2001. Figure
