a low-cost provider. These foci have allowed this company to grow at significant rates and to gain the largest market share where they are located. The companys annual reports always
include the statement regarding their objectives: "to be the low cost provider for services in our markets we serve" (Poole, 2006). Porter identified three strategies to gain a competitive advantage:
cost leadership, differentiation and niche or focus strategy (Marketing Teacher, 20006). Companies generally achieve a competitive advantage through one of two of these strategies but Waste Industries USA uses all
three. This company gains an advantage by being the low-cost provider in its niche or focus market. They are very efficient at what they do and continually look for ways
to cut their own costs (Poole, 2006). One of the ways the company is able to be the low-cost provider is by owning their own landfills (Waste Industries USA, 2006).
For example, in June 2006, the company began construction for a new landfill in Holly Springs, North Carolina (Waste Age, 2006). This landfill will not only serve as their own
dumping grounds but also will be open to others (Waste Age, 2006). It is expected to earn at least $6 million per year (Waste Age, 2006). It also saves the
company millions of dollars because they do not have to pay another landfill owner to dump their own waste. Another strategy that helps this company be the low-cost leader is
that their customers are geographically compact (Department of Justice, 2005). In an antitrust lawsuit, the court documents note that it is expensive to transport waste long distances, thus, to contain
