he was an artist who grew and developed into the 20th century, creating a very new approach to painting that had not been seen by the world. The following paper
examines his life and discusses his work, with a focus on Improvisation 31 (Sea Battle). Wassily Kandinsky: His Life and Work "Wassily Wasilyevich Kandinsky was born on December,
16th (4), 1866 in Moscow, in a well-to-do family of a businessman in a good cultural environment" (Wassilykandinsky.net). While he did study some art, as well as music, as a
child, it seems that he first became trained as a lawyer. But, when he was in his 30s he left for Munich because he had been deeply touched by art
and decided that was his calling. Through his life he traveled throughout Europe, living in Munich and Paris. In the beginning he primarily painted landscapes with his own colorful approach.
It was not until later that he would become the abstract artist. He established the famous Blue Rider art group and throughout his life continued to develop, though never so
obviously as during the early part of the 20th century. He died in 1944. The period in which Kandinsky lived was a
very tumultuous period in European history, especially where Russia and Germany (his primary locations) were concerned. He was alive during WWI and then WWII and so was clearly one to
have been pressured, in some way, by Germany, Russia, and the Nazi power that grew during these periods. It was also a time when the world suffered from the Great
