Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 6 page paper providing a brief history of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. and then focusing on some of the special national events that have taken place there. The National Cathedral has provided the setting for prayer services for the country during World War II and following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and it has been the site of the funerals of presidents and national heroes. It was the last pulpit appearance by Martin Luther King, Jr. before his assassination in 1968. It has provided a consecrated venue from which to appeal to God in response to events requiring secular response, and in so doing providing all Americans with a sense of hope and destiny that may not have been possible to attain in another setting.
