District of Columbia. It is the capital and federal district of the United States; residents refer to it as simply the District. In 1790, Congress decided that a 10 mile
square site for the capital of the country would be selected on the Potomac River along the Virginia-Maryland border. The population was less than 5,000 when the federal government moved
to Washington in 1800 when it became the seat of the national government. In 1895, the Georgetown was annexed and the city of Washington became coextensive with the District of
Columbia. Today, Washington, D.C. is the core of one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country serving as the center for both international and national diplomacy and politics. The
area that is included in the metropolitan region of the District includes parts of West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland and together had a population of over 4 million in 1990.
This study is designed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the Georgetown neighborhood, relating factors like location and internal layout, the people, historic preservation in the community, historical development
and a range of other applicable elements that provide a substantive view of this community. The information for this study has been collected from a number of sources, including
materials from library resources as well as the World Wide Web. In addition, the research also allowed for the evaluation of topographical information and the viewing of photographs and
drawings, both old and new, that reflect the transformation of Georgetown since the 18th century. The retrieval of this data occurred through library research work.
