treaties the global environment may look very different today. At first glance these treaties which were signed in 1648 there does appear to be a strong foundation laid down for
the modern system, but to appreciate the importance and influence, and to determine if this really was a significant turning point in history the impact of the treaties need to
be examined. The Westphalia treaties were peace treaties signed in Osnabruck and Munster, these treaties were important at their time as
they ended the Thirty Years War, which took place between 1618 and 1648, which was fought between the area which is now Germany and many other European nations, as well
as bring the Eight Years War to an end, which was fought between Spain and the Dutch Republic. When examining the modern state system it s not the wars and
the conflicts which led to these treaties that is important, it is the impact they had on the concept of the nation state.
Anderson (1996) argues that these treaties are the point at which there was a shift from the former universalism to the modern state system which is based on the
territorialization of politics. The treaties changes the political structure from one that was made up of vertical hierarchies with over lapping areas of influence and alliances or allegiances with a
system that was defined geographically with horizontal structures and the development of the concept of the sovereign state (Anderson, 1996). Prior to
