from the definition, however, in looking at Kupers definition we can consider whether or not Armenia would come under this definition. The Armenian genocide of 1915 may be surprising
when the history of the area. For centuries in the Ottoman Empire the Armenians and the Turks had lived harmoniously. However, as with many other regions at the beginning of
the twentieth century, there was a rise in nationalism, emphasising the differences between the ethnic races. There was fragmentation in the area as the Ottoman empire failed, many areas where
there were Christian populations gained their independence from the Empire, and the Armenians were becoming more marginalised though religious differences as well as the increased ethnic awareness. In addition
to this the Armenians where the only non Turkish speakers between the areas of Turkish speakers. Europe was aware for the problem and bad treatment given the Armenians, they asked
for and received reassurances that the treatment of these people would improve, under programs by Sultan Abdul Hamid II thousands of Armenians were killed. In 1908 a reform government of
the Young Turk Party came to power, supported by the Armenians, promising reforms. A triumvirate took control and the aim became that of eradication of the Armenians. In 1915
many Armenian leaders were slaughtered after being called to a meeting, without leaders the rest of the Armenians were targeted, the Armenians where gather together and told they were
to be relocated, they were not resistant as they did not know what was planed. They were relocated to concentration camp located between Jerablus and Deir ez-Zor (Anonymous, 2004).
