his ideas were revolutionary, although perhaps not quite as much as others. Lutheranism and Zwinglianism were seemingly just as influential as Calvinism, although that is debatable. Certainly, John Calvin brought
a message to the people that the other reformers had not. In any event, what is important is the fact that during the time period, the rise of Protestantism would
change life forever. From that time forward, and to this day, there is a rivalry between Catholic and Protestant sects and the rise of Protestantism not only changed the way
that Christianity is evaluated, but had changed much of the world. It is important to remember that during colonial times, religion was of the utmost importance and likely more
important than it is today. Religion was central to the family and daily life. It influenced everything. It started wars. It created a situation where people would flee into uncharted
territory so that they could practice as they believed. In fact, the colonists for the most part came over to the New World so they could practice their preferred religion
in peace. It is important to remember that the Protestant Reformation is viewed as something that would create a new era. People now look at the world as a before
and after situation. Events that occurred to change the religious landscape may be thought of as the end of the Middle Ages (Roberts 293). This upheaval would later be known
as the Protestant Reformation (293). It began when Luther, a German monk, decided to protest against several practices in the church (293). While Luther was perhaps the first reformer, he
was not necessarily the most influential as John Calvin would also become quite significant as a player in this religious revolution. Another interesting aspect is that although Luther started it
