topics found in Dan Browns book, The Da Vinci Code. The book is a murder mystery, a thriller; it is also a cultural mystery. A debate about the relationship between
Jesus and Mary Magdalene is one that has raged for decades, perhaps centuries. Brown claims to have researched thoroughly and his proposition that Jesus and Mary were not only married
but their union produced a child has caused a furor in certain religious communities, to say the least. In fact, the Vatican has spoken out against the book, alleging it
distorts the truth and condemns the Catholic Church. Given that the book claims to reveal secrets of the Church, the claim has merit. On the first page of the
book, Brown states" "All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate" (Brown, 2003, p. 1). This puts a factual aura over the book, leading
many readers to believe carte blanche all of the events and statements from the characters. Readers seem to forget this is a work of fiction but that is likely because
Brown weaves a credible story. Browns book presents the Holy Grail in a very different way, also. According to Browns main character, Robert Langdon, the Holy Grail is "symbolic of
the lost goddess" (Brown, 2003, p. 238). Langdon goes on to say: "Knights claimed to be "searching for the chalice" were speaking in code as a way to protect themselves
from a Church that had subjugated women, banished the Goddess, burned non-believers, and forbidden the pagan reverence for the sacred feminine" (Brown, 2003, pp. 238-239). The Holy Grail is
later interpreted to be the person of Mary Magdalene (Brown, 2003). It is the Prior of Scion, according to the book, that guards the secret of the location of Marys
