of Singapore has a mature economy as defined by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) that continues to thrive despite the economic problems that the region has experienced over the past decade. Previously one of the worlds poorest nations - it was equal to Nepal in 1960 - the government set off on a series of five-year plans in 1960 to elevate the country, the people and the economy. Derided as "paternalistic" in the mid-1990s, Singapore suffered far less in the Asian currency crisis of 1998 than any of its neighbors. Currently per capita GDP is US$49,900 (Singapore, 2008), significantly higher than the same measure in the US, where per capita GDP is US$45,800 (United States, 2008). Singapores economy depends heavily on manufacturing, specifically in information-related hardware. Rather than the 6 percent growth anticipated for 2008, the Wall Street meltdown has led the government to downgrade estimates to 3 percent growth for the year, including a decline of 0.5 percent in the third quarter led by a decline in manufacturing by 11.5 percent (MTI Revises 2008 Growth to Around 3.0 per cent, 2008).
