history of the empire, warfare was viewed as something that was defensive (1998). Interestingly, they viewed "Divine aid" as integral for their success ("Byzantine," 1998). The significant
amount of troops as well as equipment had never been considered the important element in terms of Byzantine strategy or tactics (1998). Indeed, the "Byzantine science of military tactics"
was contingent on basic reasoning that there had in fact been a sense of repetitiveness in terms of warfare and thus, due to the mastery of a variety of alternative
things, one would be able to avoid becoming surprised as well as overcome due to unexpected comprehension of military discipline (1998). One of the techniques used was a semblance
of order. They liked order because it allowed them to deal with surprise attacks better ("Byzantine," 1998). This technique applies to modern life as well. People like to keep things
orderly even during tragedy. It helps create the illusion of normalcy. During wartime, order did help. There was in fact a sense that creating order and regularity from what would
be chaos is a good thing (1998). Generally speaking the "Byzantines appreciated order, discipline, the use of commonly understood verbal orders of command and drill, the use of advanced technologies,
such as Greek fire, and experimentation with principles of mechanics and optics for the winning of military advantage" (1998). While the Byzantines excelled due to the order they incorporated, they
