war evolved tremendously between 1492 and 1815. Whether we are considering war in the Americas or war in Europe, sea power was of particular importance. Naval forces have
been an integral part of the manner which countries wage war for centuries. These mechanisms of warfare, however, have undergone an evolution which is practically lengthy as the evolution
of man himself. This evolution varied both according to region and according to need. As in most things concerning the history of technology, necessity is the mother of
invention. The need in the years spanning the last years of the fifteenth century and the early years of the nineteenth century was related to the transport of men
and weapons in as swift and efficient manner as possible so that new grounds could be gained for the more powerful of the worlds countries.
France in early history was a particularly formidable wartime power. Seapower was the brunt of much of this power. Louis XIV, for example, is said to
have satisfied his expansionist tendencies largely through the power of his naval fleet. Martin (1997) notes that Louis:
"expansionist policies required France to develop a naval force which could challenge the world -- particularly the fleets of England and Holland -- and, between 1660
and 1689, 250 battleships and frigates were built" Louis aggressive quest to make himself the
