went to war against Great Britain. Was this conflict necessary? To this day, historical experts still debate this question. In many ways, it was largely unnecessary (Drew and Snow). However,
the War of 1812 was has also been called the "final episode of Americas fight for independence and recognition within the family of nations" (Drew and Snow). In other words,
this conflict was rather like a fight between a young adult and a parent who refuses to acknowledge that an offspring has reached adult-status. Although the US won formal
independence from Great Britain in 1783, this freedom did not carry with it much British respect (Drew and Snow). One of the principal causes of the War of 1812 was
due to the way that the British treated the growing maritime enterprises of the US. The young country7 had rapidly blossomed into a trading nation, with a large merchant marine,
but without a navy of any significant size (Drew and Snow). There was an innate distrust of Americans against building up military force during peace time, but because of t
his, American trade was dependent on the goodwill of the Royal Navy (Drew and Snow). When the Napoleonic Wars rocked Europe, US merchants attempted to trade with both sides,
which ? not surprisingly ? did not sit with the British, who grew reluctant to protect ships that would trade with their enemies, which was a sentiment also shared
