that offers no clear solution to the bitter reality of war and the loss, or possible loss, of a son through battle. The following paper analyzes how this story is
reflective of the authors social environment. War by Luigi Pirandello As noted, this story discusses the reality of war as it involves sons and the possibility, or reality,
of the death of sons in war. One can presume that Pirandello wrote this story during WWI, or following WWI and in truth the story was written in 1919 and
as such clearly deals with the struggles in society relating to WWI. It was a devastating war for many and without going into detail about this particular culture, the Italian
culture, one can clearly understand that it was a war that involved Italy, as it did many other nations, and thus affected families. This is the most powerful element of
the story for it is a story that addresses very personal feelings, not necessarily cultural feelings. It is a very universal story as it touches on parenthood and the
potential, or realistic, loss of children during the war. War has always taken children from the parents and this is simply a very realistic social reality that many people have
had to deal with. This story focuses on a few people on a train who are all faced with the possible loss, or the actual loss, of a son or
sons. They are in a very simple, and yet powerful, social setting as they are all leaving Rome to presumably go home after seeing sons off or dealing with
