whether or not the U.S. should have involved itself in this issue. Critics of the war cite matters such as lack of unilateral support and reacting too quickly to
over-emphasized threats, among others, as reasons why the U.S. should not go to war with Iraq. However, the reality of the situation is that while these critics may have
arguments based on slivers of fact, the fundamental reason why the U.S. is fighting a war with Iraq is to prevent future terrorism attacks, the likes of which shocked the
world less than two years ago on September 11th. President Bush has said time and time again that the reason
U.S. troops are being sent to Iraq is to distinguish the terrorism network and to significantly reduce the threat of terrorism against this country. President Bush has repeatedly told
the American public that the threat of terrorism is substantial, and that without swift action, our country was vulnerable and at risk from more terrorist threats (War With Iraq -
History of Terrorism, 2003). And who can argue? Never before have we, as a nation, had so much to
fear. With the terrorist attacks of September 11th, everything changed - literally. No longer can one simply walk through an airport without getting a real sense of the
potential threat of terrorism. Or try entering a government building and you will be keenly aware of how much has changed in recent years in regards to the necessity
of security. What September 11th taught us (or should have taught us) as a country is that there are people in this world who want to do Americans harm
