The presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt was separated by that of Abraham Lincoln by over seventy years yet many of the philosophies
which shaped Roosevelts approach to resolving the problems of world stability after World War II and the Great Depression which had overtaken the nation prior to the War were, in
actuality, reminiscent of the ideologies Lincoln envisioned to reconstruct the nation after the horrendous impacts of the Civil War. These similarities are understandable given the similarities which existed in
the political and socioeconomic settings of the two time periods. To fully understand this contention and the potential degree to which Lincolns philosophies influenced Roosevelt, however, we must delve
somewhat deeply into the time periods in question. To initiate the discussion proposed above we shall first start with the societal situation which
Lincoln encountered immediately after the Civil War. We will, in fact, find many similarities to the situation which would confront Roosevelt some seventy years later. The aftermath
of the Civil War was, of course, one of the most turbulent periods ever faced by this nation. The cohesion of states which formed the nation had been torn
apart by ideology and war. With the end of the Civil War our nation, not yet one-hundred years old, was faced with picking up the pieces and moving on.
Although the northern states had escaped the Civil War relatively unscathed, and in fact had prospered as a result of it,
the south has sustained tremendous damage both materially and ideologically. It was up to the government to reclaim what was reclaimable and to rebuild what was completely devastated.
