serves as the backdrop of the entire story. Calkas, who is the father of Criseyde, knew that Troy was doomed, and so he left for the Greek camp.
He quite literally abandoned his daughter, thus war is the source of much anger and resentment for Criseyde. Troilus falls in
love with Criseyde when he is struck with the love gods arrow. Pandarus, who is Criseydes uncle, assists Troilus in the pursuit of his new love. The first
glimpse that Criseyde catches of Troilus is an impressive one - she views Troilus to be the perfect knight. Again, the image of war and all that it represents
is evident in her feelings for Troilus. She admires his nobility, honor, and courage that surely a knight must possess.
Throughout this story Chaucer uses the war and military imagery to encourage Criseyde to see the hero inside of Troilus. By painting him to be a courageous war hero,
this evokes from Criseyde an image of him as being brave, strong, courageous and heroic. Clearly, this would serve to impress any woman, and it works brilliantly for Troilus.
