how women during this period experienced a profound "awakening" -- one in which new doors would open up for them in more ways than one. As an author,
Wang Anyi represents the new generation of Chinese women writers and as such, she exemplifies the ultimate realization of the awakening that her characters experience. Anyi deals with the tribulations
of a generation whose lives were disrupted by the Cultural Revolution, now struggling with their interpersonal dramas against the backdrop of the political exigencies of modern China. It is seminal
in the annals of modern Chinese literature in its gentle but frank approach to the subject of sex, depicted realistically from a womans point of view. Her approach to
the subject would have been nothing short of incendiary during the Mao years, and are no less radical now. For Wang, love is the primary motivation in life -- not
career, not family, and certainly not ones country. But the main characters in "Love in a Small Town" begin to see for the first time ever that love is not
necessarily ones proverbial idea of "everything" as career opportunities and broadening frontiers opened up before Chinese women. Despite its emphasis on individuals rather than broad social movements, Wang
sees the cultural upheavals which have befallen the mainland in its over forty years under socialism as a backdrop, not a major player, the psychological exploration of the two sexes
in love. Indeed, Wang seems to say, the ability of lovers to continue their gentle dance of courtship under such restrictive circumstances reaffirms the strength of the indomitable Chinese spirit.
