many characters who all possess a different sort of outlook on their lives. But, they are all characters who dream of having something better, and characters who struggle with their identity in society in one way or another. Two characters in this play are Walter and Ruth. The following paper examines and analyzes the two characters as they relate to black mans success in America and raising a child in poverty. Walter and Ruth in A Raisin in the Sun Walter and Ruth are married in this play. They live with Walters mother, along with their son and Walters sister Beneatha. They are clearly both individuals who are struggling, financially, in society as they live with the mother. Walter is a man who wants to be far more than he is, and a man who feels very burdened and oppressed in the white mans world where the opportunities for black men are few and far between. In the case of Ruth she is a supportive and strong woman who does her best to make the family as stable as possible. In America, in the past and also in the present, there is an underlying reality wherein the African American man is different from the white man and that the African American male is simply not given the same opportunities, or not as many opportunities, as the white man. This play takes place during a time when the African Americans were beginning to see more freedoms, yet the society still restricted them greatly. In understanding where Walter exists, in this realm concerning race and society, it is perhaps important to look at the reality of the African American in the past, as well as the present, in relationship to having opportunities.
