work "Sweet Land Stories" is undeniably reliable when it comes to giving the reader a detailed and clear account of the events that happened in the short story, "Walter John
Harmon." However, his actions come under strict scrutiny and this essay will discuss whether he is in fact a good man and if his intentions and actions are indeed altruistic
or selfish. In this story, people are tied of the boredom so an educated lawyer and his wife decide to join a religious cult. They basically suspend rational
thought and consider all natural events to be divine acts of God. The narrator clearly describes what the cult is all about and how they conduct their business. Harmon serves
as leader of the cult and Jim, as well as many others, believe Harmon and the cult will lead him and these individuals down the righteous path. But adultery is
committed between Harmon and Jims wife, Betty. In fact, the two eventually run off together. Jim wants to seek revenge, but he feels it will destroy the cult and everything
the community has built. Jim takes charge of the cult and critics conclude that Doctorow left the ending ambiguous because the reader does not explain whether Jims faith has become
stronger or his renewed devotion is a defensive response to his wifes betrayal. While the story ends with the threat of violence but no real violence transpiring, it is
