West Virginia. Even in the relative seclusion of rural life his life was no picture book. his father was prolific, to say the least, "having many children by
almost as many women" (Mehren PG). After the death of his parents Myers, at the age of one, was placed in foster care where he grew up in Harlem
(Mehren PG). Myers provides a much needed contrasts to many "children of the state", however. Although he gave them considerable troubles, became involved with gangs and the like,
Myers was given a sound and loving home life by his foster parents and eventually even took his middle name "Dean" in their honor (Connors PG, Mehren PG).
Myers is quick to point out that the Deans, his foster parents, were very supportive of him and that they went to exceptional
lengths to ensure that he grew into an independent and successful young man (Connors 1994). He provides many reasons for his early problems. Part of Myers troubles as
a youth revolved around a speech impediment (Mehren PG). Because he stuttered very few could understand him (Mehren PG). His reaction, understandably, was anger. He ran the
hard streets of Harlem learning many of lifes lessons. Taken under the wing of one of his teachers, the former Marine Irwin Lasher, Myers began to write and ,
consequently, to turn his life around. Although he would drop out of high school to join the Army, then become employed in a seemingly endless variety of low-paying laborer
type jobs, his writing would hold with him and eventually pull him through. Eventually Myers would mature into the responsible and successful young man the Deans and others like
