during his lifetime as many people thought his work was far too sexual for the late 19th century. The following paper examines the life and work of Walt Whitman and
focuses on how he was a unique individual who was not truly influenced by any movement or any individual as much as he was influenced by his own development and
his search for his own identity. . His Life "Walt Whitman was born in Long Island, New York, the son of a Quaker carpenter" in 1819 (Books and
Writers). For the first few years of his life they lived on a farm and then moved to Brooklyn (Walt Whitman and the Development of Leaves of Grass: Island 1:
Beginnings). It was here that he got his formal education, though perhaps not an incredibly extensive education. He had a love of nature from a very early nature and this
perhaps helped to urge him along in his passionate exploration of the world and himself. While still relatively young, at the age of 12, he left school to become a
printers apprentice and then went on to work as a journeyman printer and a teacher (Books and Writers). Following that period of his life he went and explored many different
types of jobs, writing for various publications and essentially seeking his voice (Books and Writers). He did this in Manhattan (Walt Whitman and the Development of Leaves of Grass: Island
