of nature from a very early nature. While still relatively young he left school to become a printers apprentice and then went on to work as a journeyman printer and a teacher (Books and Writers). "After that he held a great variety of jobs while writing and editing for several periodicals, The Brooklyn Eagle from 1846 to 1848 and The Brooklyn Times from 1857 to 1858" (Books and Writers). He essentially spent the early years of his career learning all there is to know about the newspaper business and writing. Whitmans most famous work is his collection of poems called "Leaves of Grass." It was, however, not necessarily a work that gained him a great deal of positive attention from the public. However, when the third edition was printed in 1860 it was warmly received by the public. One of his most famous fans was Ralph Waldo Emerson who once said of Walt and Leaves of Grass, in 1855, "I am very happy in reading it, as great power makes us happy" (Books and Writers). It is interesting to note that he continued to work on, add to, refine "Leaves of Grass" (Benets Readers Encyclopedia of American Literature [2] 595). Whitman worked as a clerk in Washington during the Civil War and when he heard that his brother was wounded he left for Fredericksburg and cared for his brother, along with other Union and Confederate soldiers who needed care (Books and Writers). Through his experience during the Civil War he was inspired to write numerous poems. Whitman was never widely received in a positive manner by much of the public because they felt his discussion of sexuality was wrong. He was something of an embarrassment to people and yet he never seemed to be dampened by this treatment. ...
