as his poetry showed the way to have faith in ourselves (Klier 334). In other words, Whitman ushered in a new paradigm after the trauma of the American Civil War,
a new mind set that showed the way to building a new sort of world, one that all Americans had to build together (Klier 334). Civil War experience The American
Civil War was a difficult time for the nation and a time of trial for Whitman as well. This conflict was the most significant political event in his life, as
it was for his entire generation (Mosher 587). During this war, the majority of Whitmans energies were reserved for his hospital work (Baym, et al 920). In December of 1862,
Whitman saw a New York City newspaper that listed one of his brothers among those wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg (Valiumas 70). Whitman headed to Virginia to find him,
and, once he did, he stayed on in Washington to work as a volunteer nurse and minister to the wounded soldiers. The suffering that Whitman witnessed was horrendous. According
to Whitmans own estimates, he aided over 100,000 soldiers during this period, many of whom became his devoted friends (Valiumas 70). However, while Whitmans role as a nurse during the
Civil War was heroic and demonstrated his deep love of his country, this experience served to undercut his previously buoyant good health (Baym, et al 920). It was during this
period that Whitman contracted tuberculosis, a condition that would undermine his health for the rest of his life and contribute to his death at age seventy-two due to pneumonia
