she tells the events of her life, the tale really centers on a man by the name of Mr. Sweet, a black gentleman who lives in the neighborhood. Mr. Sweet
is ironically anything but sweet. While some think he has a nasty attitude, and he is known for heavy drinking, the children for some reason are endeared to him. He
is continually dying throughout the narrators childhood and she reports that it was nice to bring him around. She explains that she always knew he would not die and would
be okay. The children in the area were fond of him too and so, whenever there was rumor that his death was imminent, the children would gather around him. They
seemed to almost bring him back to life. A student writing on this subject may want to note that the following essay contains a point of view, but it will
be clear in the context of the writing. The truth is that either this man who was dying was brought to life by the childrens love, or he was just
pretending to be dying. There are of course other possible explanations, but those seem to be the most likely. In the context of the story, the children would be summoned,
and the narrators father would let them go, saying something to the effect of "to hell with dying." He would allow the children their roles in Mr. Sweets life. In
other words, it was more important that the children be a part of Mr. Sweets life than be sheltered from death and illness. In todays culture, there is certainly a
tendency to shelter children from death and dying. They are often kept away from funerals, at least until a certain age. In the black community however, children are often present
