come clear only at the end of the story, when she realizes that one daughters (Dee) selfishness is hurting the other (Maggie); further, it argues that Dees attempt to take the quilts makes her mother realize how important they are as part of the familys living history, not as artifacts to be hung on a wall. Discussion The protagonist of the story is also the narrator, a woman whose first name we never learn; her last name is Johnson (Walker). Her physical traits include the fat that she is obese but extremely strong, a "large, big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands"; mentally she is sharp and observant; morally she is upright, hard-working, independent and protective of her daughter Maggie; and she behaves with grace and dignity (Walker 24). She knows who she is and has no need to pretend to be something shes not, a lesson that her daughter Dee - who calls herself "Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo" - has not yet learned (Walker 29). Of all her traits, it is the strength of her moral character that seems to be most important in the story. Johnsons main antagonist in the story is her daughter, Dee. Its not that they are enemies so much as the fact that Dee has left home and created a new persona for herself, thus trying to deny who and what she is. She is no longer Dee Johnson, but is calling herself, as noted above, Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo, a name that she probably made up because it sounds African (Walker). Her mother has been through a great many struggles and she knows that her relationship with Dee is difficult; in a wonderful analogy, Walker compares it to that of a star whose parents "surprise" her by "tottering in weakly from backstage" on a TV show ...
