with my own aesthetic sense. First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Waldo Frank. After a salutation, a letter from Frank to Sandburg would have undoubtedly have
explained to Sandburg who he was and his connection to a literary group known as the "Young Americans." This was a group of "cultural radicals" who felt that the regeneration
of society would be dependent on an alteration in what Frank described as the "deep psychic patterns" of private life (Moreland and Battan 101). For the Young Americans, industrialization
destroyed any personal sense of meaning and purpose based on commonly held spiritual values (Moreland and Battan 101). Countering this, Frank argued that "creation is revolution," and that by
"unleashing the imagination of the masses" through a democratization of art and culture, the full potential of the "human personality" could be realized (Moreland and Battan 101). Mr. Sandburg, I
have observed that you express a similar optimism toward the American worker, which you express so well in the poem "I am the people, the mob," in which you write
"I AM the people -- the mob -- the crowd -- the mass/ Do you know that all the great work of the world is done through me?" (lines 1-2
"I am the people, the mob." In this, we share a similar sentiment. However, your work expresses a much more accepting and optimistic attitude toward industrialization than I do. Your
muse, indeed, seems to be the industrial age, complete with all its fault. In "Chicago," you write enumerate the faults of that city, its prostitutes, murders, and brutality, but
