currently embroiled in litigation on just about every front. However there is one issue that Wal-mart resolved to the satisfaction of several people, including the U.S. government. That is the
issue of the environment. Earth Talk (2006) reports that Wal-mart poses a diverse environment threat to local communities. In rural environments, it
replaces farmland with concrete and 2005 Wal-mart paid $1.5 million to Connecticut for improper storage of pesticides that drained into local streams. It paid settled another $765,000 in Florida for
mishandling of petroleum storage. The list goes on. Since then, Wal-mart has implemented a number of environmental changes. Stages 1, 2,
3 and 4 As a result of legal threats, Wal-mart has settled a number of claims with local governments. It has also implemented
other changes within all of its stores to deal with environmental issues down the road. According to Deutsch (2007), these include reducing energy, the use of compact florescent light bulbs
and more efficiency in its fleet of trucks for a total of 15 percent reduction in environmental impact in these areas. It also has a plan in place to install
solar energy at 22 sites. In this respect, Wal-mart went as far as it needed to go in order to meet the
requirements of the government and public opinion about its environmental impact. But, surprisingly, it went one step further. It also made other concessions to consumers by sharing costs of reduced
energy with them. It significantly reduced the price of compact florescent light bulbs with the goal of selling 100 million to consumers so that savings could be realized by everyone.
