Japan where there are currently has a net loss of $65 million and the sales are declining. The refurbishments do not appear to be working so the first decision may
to pull out of the country and cut the losses. If this is not an acceptable strategy there needs to be the decision on how to develop strategy to
gain a unique and attractive competitive advantage in Japan, this may mean moving away from the traditional Wal-Mart strategy of everyday low prices and a customer centric approach as the
main difference, but to loom to other areas of potential advantage. This may also mean going into partnership with another company or forming a strategic alliance as well as being
prepared to change the way operations take place. 2. There are several factors which will be important in this decision. Firstly the company need to understand the Japanese market, looking
at what attracts the customers and also what the competition are doing. This may mean examining the macro environment using tools such as a PEST analysis. With the understanding of
the market the company then needs to look inwards, considering what core competences they have and also which resources they have access to or can access. The way in which
these internal resources and competences can then be used to fill a gap in the market or compete with a competitive advantage need to be concluded after this information has
