(Johnson, 2002). In the 1970s, Wal-Mart adopted information technology (IT) solutions "to facilitate cross docking" (ICFAI, 2003). They adopted bar codes to track their inventory and then imitative Electronic Data
Interchange (EDI), which provided direct links between the central office and stores as well as between stores (ICFAI, 2003). The EDI system allowed the company to "coordinate all the activities
of its supply chain" (ICFAI, 2003). EDI was then adopted to communicate directly with suppliers (ICFAI, 2003). One of the companys most recent initiatives is the move from bar codes
to Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems (ICFAI, 2003). Corporate headquarters held a meeting with its 100 largest suppliers in July 2003 at which time, they announced their decision to move
into the RFID technology and to advise their suppliers on how to adopt this technology (ICFAI, 2003). They gave suppliers just over one year to comply - by July 2005,
all of these suppliers were expected to be in line (ICFAI, 2003). The goals of the switch were to increase efficiency in supply chain management while at the same time
reducing the cost of supply chain management (ICFAI, 2003). RFID technologies "use radio waves to automatically identify people or objects" (The Microsoft Corporation, 2005). The most common method is storing
