The Wall-Mart figures are taken from the relevant years accounts, the industry figures are from MSN Money (2005) unless otherwise stated. We will look at a range of ratios.
The first two are profit ratios, the gross profit and the pre tax profit. Then main purpose of any business sit to make money for the shareholders. The gross profit
is the return created with only the cost of the goods deducted whereas the pre tax profit margin is the profit after all costs and income are considered before tax.
This needs to be positive and the company should be showing a good profit,. Here there is a good growth, but the levels are slightly below industry avenge. However with
a low price strategy Wal-Mart are selling in high volumes so the margins are still creating good returns. The shareholders may also be interested to know how these earnings equate
in terms of the number of shares outstanding. The industry average here is taken from Yahoo Finance. Here we are also looking for an increase, which shows that more
money is being made for the shareholders. Here we see there is a superior performance. The shares may be performing well, but the shareholders may also want to assess
the current performance also the use of the return on assets and the return on equity may be a goods measure on efficiency. For efficiency we can also look
