Their business model is simple: "low-price, low-wage, globally-sourced" (UC Santa Barbara, 2004). They have achieved their remarkable success because they have always used advanced information technology tools (UC Santa Barbara, 2004). This company is an innovator who has changed the way retail business is conducted and who will continue to do so. Porters Five Force Analysis Porter offered an analysis process he called the Five Forces to gain insight into any companys profitability and competitive ranking in their market. The Five Forces are: rivalry/competition among existing competitors; the threat of new entrants into the market; the availability of substitute products or services; the bargaining power of buyers; and the bargaining power of suppliers (Porter, 1980). Using this model, a company is able to gain insight into their own position within their industry. The retail industry is fiercely competitive and in todays marketplace, Wal-Mart faces the challenge of domestic as well as global or international companies. This is true in the United States and in dozens of other countries. Wal-Mart beats their competitors on sheer size with 6,300 stores, two-thirds of which are in the U.S. (Biesada 2006). Besides its own stores, Wal-Mart holds a majority position in Seiyu, Co., Ltd, a Japanese corporation (Biesada 2006). Its two major competitors in the U.S. are Target and K-Mart, neither of which is nearly as large or as profitable as is Wal-Mart (Biesada 2006). Wal-Mart is an exceptionally efficient organization and this type of efficiency allows the company to better control their fixed costs (Biesada 2006).
