Those who hate Wal-Mart say that the opening of a Wal-Mart in a new city forces small businesses to close. They argue that employees do not earn a living wage nor do employees receive health benefits. It should be recognized that some people just dont like huge corporations no matter what. These folks especially do not like huge, multinational, dominant organizations. And, Wal-Mart is certainly the dominant player in retail. It is the largest retail corporation and the second-largest corporation in the world. It was the largest company in the world until oil prices spiked and Exxon Mobil moved into first place (Jantzen, Pescatrice and Braunstein, 2009). Others praise Wal-Mart for many reasons. They bring low prices to consumers who cannot really afford to shop in more exclusive stores. They offer prescriptions usually at the lowest prices in town. They employ millions of people. Wal-Mart has exceptionally good organizational culture. They are customer-oriented. They may have the most efficient logistics system in the industry. They are brilliant at saving money and getting the lowest prices from their suppliers. They always use state-of-the-art information technology systems. They were one of the few companies to post profits during the recent financial crisis. This is a very controversial company.
